One important impetus of the Tiananmen movement was the Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev's historic 4-day visit to China, May 15-18, 1989. Fed up with Deng Xiaoping's utter loathing of political reforms, and inspired by Gorbachev's perestroika and glasnost, the protesters greeted Gorbachev with enthusiasm. Here, they held up a sign, in Chinese and Russian, in Tiananmen Square where the welcoming ceremony was supposed to take place, and it read "Democracy, our shared ideal." Deng ordered the ceremony move to the Great Hall of the People to avoid the protesters and their message.
