On September 24, 2011, the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet issued a statement on the issue of reincarnation in Dharamsala. The statement said that when he reached the age of Gendun Juba, the first Dalai Lama (i.e. after 84 years old), he would seek the opinions of Tibetan Buddhist monks and Xizang people to decide whether to continue the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama.
The current Dalai Lama is 89 years old, but the issue of his reincarnation has yet to be determined. On the morning of July 29, 2024, Bianba Tsering paid a visit to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who was recovering, in Upstate New York. Bianba Tsering stated that the Dalai Lama's physical condition was good, and there were immediate reports that he would confirm his reincarnation after turning 90. Whether this is a coincidence or arranged is a matter of personal opinion.
On August 28th, the Karmapa issued a statement during a meeting, stating that "the Dalai Lama's body is relatively weak, accompanied by obvious fatigue, and his voice is noticeably weaker than before", calling for "ensuring the Dalai Lama's rest and health" and "Tibetans working together for a greater cause and realizing the Dalai Lama's wishes". Bianba Tsering and Karmapa have completely different views on the Dalai Lama's physical condition, who is true and who is false? What is the purpose of the two of them? It is also worth pondering.
The different views of Bianba Tsering and Karmapa on the reincarnation and physical condition of the Dalai Lama can be inferred from their backgrounds. Bianba Tsering was born in Barakubi, India and graduated from Madras Christian University in Chennai with a major in economics. He is the second democratically elected political leader elected by the Xizang government through democratic procedures after the Dalai Lama relinquished his political leadership in 2011. The reason for the departure of Karmapa Wujin Chitlej Dorje to India in 1999 is still a subject of various conflicting accounts. On January 7, 2000, China stated that "the letter left by the 17th Karmapa when he left Chubu Monastery stated that this trip was to go abroad to retrieve the black hats and artifacts of past Karmapas, rather than betraying the country and the nation, the temple, and its leaders. On January 13, 2000, the Chinese authorities denied the establishment of a separate Karmapa Living Buddha. On January 21 of the same year, the Chinese government announced that the Karmapa would eventually return to Tibet. Overall, the Chinese government's attitude or stance towards the 17th Karmapa is not clear, and it is seen as both a united front target and a work target.
