The live-fire exercise threats shows Australia that Chinese military presence is not just the South China Sea or Taiwan Strait. This move is meant to erode Australia’s sense of strategic distance. PLA Navy cant can reach the South Pacific.
The timing is critical. Right after Australia held talks with China’s military. Beijing is reminding Canberra that diplomacy and power projection happen together.
Normally, a nation conducting live-fire drills would provide 12-24 hours’ notice. China instead chose to let commercial airlines hear it first. The illusion of unpredictability is sometimes more useful than actual aggression
The live fire and no fly zone isn't an accident either. Its a diplomatic ploy using hard power. By skirting the line in international waters, causing an uproar. It creates strategic uncertainty to make Australia and New Zealand nervous about the predictability of regional security.
The strongest message is often sent with with disruption. In critical areas US allies once thought safe.
